We often think of evolution as a competition––survival of the fittest. In reality, organisms avoid wasting life and limb on this. Instead, they specialize and partner with other organisms to meet their suite of needs. Flowers attract pollinators, fruits tantalize seed dispersers. Living things invest in and shape each other. These coevolutionary processes are at work in our teams too – both with other species and in and between our teams. Our communities are more like those of ants than chimpanzees. For us, it takes a village. But our collaborations require lifetimes of thoughtful practice, mentoring, and consideration. How might we develop our capacity for fruitful collaboration?
